GIFFORDS condemns nomination of Matt Gaetz for attorney general

WASHINGTON GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, condemned President Trump’s nomination of Congressman Matt Gaetz for attorney general.

Gaetz has called to abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which sits within the Department of Justice, and even introduced a bill in Congress to do so. He said, “Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms should be the name of a chain of convenience stores in Florida, not a federal agency.”

“In addition to being wholly unqualified for the role, Matt Gaetz’s nomination is a slap in the face to law enforcement and parents across this country who want to keep their kids safe from gun violence,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Gaetz wants to dismantle the law enforcement agency that prosecutes criminals with illegal guns and fights gun trafficking. As attorney general, he would only exacerbate the epidemic of gun violence in the United States and decrease public safety. If senators care about reducing crime and protecting American lives, they will oppose Matt Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general.”
