Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords remembers the victims of the Oxford High School shooting
WASHINGTON — Ahead of November 30, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the national gun safety organization GIFFORDS, honored the lives of the four students killed during a mass shooting at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, Michigan on November 30, 2021. An additional seven people were injured during the shooting, which was carried out with a semiautomatic handgun. After the shooting, Michigan legislators responded by passing several bills, including red flag laws, safe storage laws, and universal background checks, marking a crucial step forward in the fight against gun violence in the state.
“Today, I’m thinking of the four young students whose lives were cut short, and the pain of their families and friends who still mourn their loss,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. “The shooting at Oxford High School was a tragedy that should never have happened, yet our children continue to die by gun violence at a horrifying rate. It’s time to give up on the myth that school shootings are a fact of life and that they cannot be prevented. Strong gun policies save lives, and our lawmakers must act now to sign commonsense solutions into law.”
