GUN SAFETY VICTORY: Janelle Bynum elected to Congress

WASHINGTON – GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulated Rep.-elect Janelle Bynum on her election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Oregon families have elected a proven champion for safer communities in Rep.-elect Janelle Bynum,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “As a mother of four and a state legislator, she has demonstrated unwavering courage in taking on the gun violence epidemic, from cracking down on ghost guns to keeping firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers. While Republicans in Congress have chosen politics over public safety, Rep.-elect Bynum has chosen action over inaction. I’m thrilled to congratulate her on this historic victory and look forward to working together to build a safer America for all.”

In the state legislature, Bynum developed a proven track record of putting children and families first and has been a powerful voice for commonsense gun safety measures, earning her an F rating from the NRA in the process. In office, she worked to pass numerous measures to keep her constituents safe—including bills to crack down on the proliferation of dangerous untraceable ghost guns, disarm domestic abusers and stalkers and incentivize gun owners to safely store their weapons. She also helped pave the way for the passage of extreme risk legislation in her state, which gave families and law enforcement officers the ability to petition a court to remove firearms from an individual exhibiting signs of wanting to harm themselves or others.
