Ahead of Trump DOJ speech: Five things that would actually support law and order
Any president serious about fighting crime must reduce gun violence and support law enforcement
WASHINGTON — Ahead of President Trump’s speech tomorrow at the Department of Justice on “law and order,” GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, highlighted what the Trump administration could do actually combat crime – namely, reducing gun violence and supporting law enforcement. Under the first Trump administration, Americans saw a 34% increase in gun homicides.
“If President Trump was serious about ‘law and order’ he would build on the bipartisan progress made over the last few years to reduce gun violence and fight crime,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “From fully funding law enforcement agencies like the FBI and ATF, to strengthening laws that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, we have a proven, popular roadmap to bolster public safety and save lives. So far, we have only seen pardons of armed extremists who assaulted police, and promises to undo the progress we’ve made to stop gun violence. If President Trump is committed to law and order, he will put American lives over the will and money of the gun lobby.”
Five policies to reduce gun violence and support law enforcement:
- Support funding for our federal law enforcement so they can help state and local governments fight gun crime.
- Champion known anti-crime measures like background checks and red flag laws, and keep dangerous ghost guns off the streets.
- Nominate a qualified and experienced ATF director.
- Support programs that strengthen police-community relationships at the local level.
- Hold accountable those like the January 6 extremists who target law enforcement and have a record of violence.
Trump has instructed Attorney General Bondi to review every action taken related to guns and come up with a plan to undo those they define as an “infringement” on the Second Amendment, under the guise of protecting our rights.
