It’s Time to Take Gun Safety Into Our Own Hands, It Starts with Safe Storage

In a world filled with uncertainty, safeguarding our families and loved ones remains a top priority.

Too often, we see news stories about children accidentally accessing guns and harming either themselves or a loved one. Owning a firearm is a constitutional right, but with that right comes great responsibility.

Just as wearing a seat belt is second nature when stepping into a car, responsible firearm storage should be ingrained in every gun owners’ daily routine. Both practices are simple, but powerful in saving lives—exemplifying our commitment to safety and reminding us that taking preventive measures can make all the difference in protecting our loved ones from harm.

A recent analysis from The Trace found that accidental shootings among children happen nearly daily in the United States. Between May 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023, there were 162 incidents where a child under 13 was able to access a gun and either wounded or killed themselves or another child. According to the Centers for Disease Control, firearms are now the leading cause of death for children—more than cancer and car crashes.

That’s unacceptable. With these staggering numbers, you would think this would be a top priority for Congress to address. While some action was taken last year with the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, it wasn’t nearly enough, and more must be done urgently.

As a business leader working in a space that can help keep kids safe from guns, I feel a moral imperative to talk more openly about the importance of safe storage, and to get more involved in the fight for gun safety. While the debate surrounding firearm legislation may continue on a larger scale, the responsibility lies with each of us to take immediate steps within our own homes and communities. After all, this fight is personal.

A recent study found that in 2021, 4.6 million children lived in households with loaded, unlocked firearms. As a grandmother, I fear for my grandson when he goes to school or a playdate at someone’s house—worried that an unlocked firearm may lead to tragedy as it so often does. But if safe firearm storage becomes the norm, we can stop these preventable tragedies and save lives.

That’s why Mycube has teamed up with GIFFORDS to make it as easy as possible for families to safely store their firearms and herald in a new era of firearm safety advocacy. Together, we’re aiming to foster responsible gun ownership practices and make secure storage solutions accessible to all families. To do that, we created a Gun Owners Toolkit to empower all firearm owners with the tools they need to create safe havens for their loved ones. And Mycube’s affordable pricing makes it more financially accessible for gun owners committed to gun safety to access the safe storage tools they need to save lives.

I challenge other business leaders, community members, and parents to embrace the values of responsibility, compassion, and proactivity and do more to protect our kids from gun violence. By securing our firearms and preventing access by unauthorized individuals, we can take decisive action to protect our children from harm.

Society’s collective commitment to safe firearm storage extends beyond mere obligation; it is an expression of love and devotion to our families. This initiative serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that we possess the agency to protect our children and ensure their well-being. We have the opportunity to make a lasting impact and ensure that no more lives are lost to preventable accidents.
