As an experienced educator, social justice advocate, and committed state legislator, Senator Ghazala Hashmi has dedicated her life to serving others and addressing some of the toughest challenges facing her community—including the scourge of gun violence. She’s also no stranger to making history: In 2019, Senator Hashmi was the first Muslim and the first South Asian American to be elected to the Virginia Senate, where her consequential victory helped deliver a gun safety majority that has taken crucial action to prevent senseless violence across the commonwealth.
Now, Senator Hashmi is running to be Virginia’s next lieutenant governor—a position that has been held for four years by a gun lobby-backed politician who has consistently put the safety of children and families last. If elected, Senator Hashmi will bring order and efficiency back to the office, and she’ll be a tireless advocate for strengthening Virignia’s gun laws even further. She has led and supported legislation to impose civil penalties on individuals that leave, place, or store a handgun in an unattended motor vehicle, establish standards of conduct for firearms manufacturers to ensure their products are not sold by distributors who violate the law, and limit the sale and possession of assault weapons. In Richmond, she’ll work with partners in the legislature to continue funding lifesaving community violence intervention programs, disarm domestic abusers once and for all, and take on the gun lobby’s corrupt practices and dangerous rhetoric head on.
