Throughout her career, Gina Ortiz Jones has always put the safety of her fellow citizens first—from her time serving as an intelligence officer deployed to Iraq, to her tenure as the 27th Under Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon, and at home in San Antonio, where she’s been a tireless advocate for stronger gun safety measures in her community. 

As a public school graduate and the daughter of a teacher, Ortiz Jones believes it’s unconscionable that children across Texas have to consistently live in fear of becoming a victim of gun violence in their classrooms or on their streets. As mayor, she’ll fight tirelessly to implement the commonsense solutions needed to save lives across her city, like increasing funding levels for community violence intervention programs that are proven to disrupt cycles of violence. Having trained with assault rifles and carried weapons of war overseas, she knows the sheer power of certain firearms and will do everything in her power to ensure they don’t fall into the wrong hands. Ortiz Jones is also acutely aware that Texas’s gun safety laws are among the worst in the country, and if elected, she’ll be a vocal advocate for policies that would both protect her constituents from harm and help local law enforcement officers be able to better do their jobs—including universal background checks, red flag laws, improved safe storage requirements, and stronger protections for victims of domestic violence. 

With so much chaos coming out of Washington DC and Austin, San Antonio residents need strong leaders at the local level who are ready to fight back against the gun lobby’s dangerous agenda—leaders like Gina Ortiz Jones. With her leading the way in the mayor’s office, Texans can rest assured that they’ll always have a champion in power who won’t tire in the fight to build a safer future for our children and families.
