Governor JB Pritzker’s values have always led him to do big things that have a lasting impact on people’s lives, and since taking office in 2019, he’s been working every day to put government back on the side of working families and to keep the communities he represents safe from harm.
In his current capacity, Governor Pritzker knows that his most important job is to ensure the safety of Illinoisans from Chicago to the Metro East. Throughout his tenure, he’s put in place commonsense reforms to do just that—strengthening his state’s gun laws by banning the sale and possession of ghost guns and expanding background checks to every gun sale in Illinois. In 2021, Governor Pritzker declared gun violence a public health crisis, and during his first term he passed significant legislation to provide mental health funding for communities most impacted by gun violence and modernize his state’s Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card system, which hadn’t previously been updated since its creation over 50 years ago.
In the wake of the tragic Fourth of July shooting in Highland Park, Illinois—in which seven innocent parade goers were killed—Governor Pritzker turned his state’s collective pain and grief into action by demanding that the state legislature pass a ban on assault weapons. Like many statewide leaders, he knows his state is not an island, and even with some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, Illinois is only as safe as the state with the weakest laws. If reelected, he will work with the federal government to make sure that glaring loopholes in America’s firearm laws are closed once and for all, so that Illinoisans are no longer put at risk by the weak laws of their neighbors—particularly as it relates to the scourge of gun trafficking.
As our nation continues to see spiking rates of gun violence from coast to coast, the need to elect governors who can achieve real results has become more important than ever. Governor JB Pritzker has proven time and again that he is the leader Illinoisans need in this moment, and he will bring a record of key gun safety wins and strategic leadership with him to Springfield if reelected. We’re proud to support him in this fight, and know that the work he will continue to do as governor during his second term will save countless lives from gun violence across the Land of Lincoln.
