As a mother, teachers union president, and recipient of the Women in Government Presidential Award, Delegate Jeion Ward has spent her life shattering the glass ceiling and working to make Virginia a better, safer, and more equitable place for the next generation. A core part of this important work is keeping her constituents safe from senseless gun violence. In 2020, Delegate Ward introduced legislation to reinstate the one-gun-per-month limit on the number of guns an individual may purchase, which helped law enforcement decrease the number of handguns being redirected to the unregulated market. In 2010, she also introduced a bill that would have required a certificate of registration for every machine gun in the Commonwealth. While this bill did not pass in Virginia, it was used as a model for similar legislation at the federal level. With levels of gun violence rising, it’s more important than ever that we restore a gun safety majority in the Virginia House of Delegates—and that starts with reelecting committed champions in the fight to save lives like Delegate Jeion Ward. We must send her back to Richmond this fall to continue her efforts to bolster public safety.
