Throughout her life, JoAnna Mendoza has stepped up to serve her community in Southern Arizona time and time again—as a US Navy and Marine veteran, as a single mother and proud community advocate, and now as a candidate for Congress in one of the most important battleground districts in the country. In every capacity, she’s shown that she has the grit and tenacity to take on some of the toughest fights facing our families. And in Washington DC, she’ll be a consistent champion for commonsense solutions to improve the lives of others, particularly on the issue of gun safety.
In her service overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, Mendoza became an expert in marksmanship and trained to use various types of firearms, from a pistol to an M16. While she believes in the right to responsible gun ownership, Mendoza also knows that we can and must do more to keep our children safe and end our nation’s epidemic of senseless violence. In Congress, she will be a strong voice for meaningful measures designed to save lives, like universal background checks, stronger safe storage requirements, and increased regulations on untraceable gun ghosts. Mendoza will also work to continue lifesaving federal funding allocations to mental health and community violence intervention programs doing the hard work on the ground to interrupt cycles of violence and give our children the resources they need to thrive. As part of her lifelong work to support veterans across America, she’ll also push the Department of Defense to require annual gun violence prevention training in an attempt to better educate service members on the warning signs of suicide and domestic violence.
Now more than ever, children and families across the Sixth District need a leader in office like Mendoza who will bring Arizona values like honesty, integrity, and accountability to Washington DC. However, her race won’t be easy—it will take every last vote to overcome the gun lobby’s influence and meddling for this seat. This fall, voters must mobilize like never before to send this champion to office. With JoAnna Mendoza leading the way, we know a safer future is within reach.
