Representative John Larson has been one of the nation’s strongest voices for gun violence prevention throughout his career. As a father and former public school teacher, he refuses to back down when it comes to the safety of our kids, our schools, and our communities—and he’s not afraid to disrupt business as usual to get things done. After the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016, Representative Larson teamed up with the late Representative John Lewis to organize an unprecedented sit-in on the House floor, demanding a vote on commonsense gun safety measures. More than 170 Democrats joined the historic protest, putting a spotlight on Republican inaction in the face of countless deadly mass shootings.
This term, Representative Larson has continued to press for the passage of commonsense gun safety legislation as a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. He proudly voted for the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Actearlier this year, which will save countless lives by taking weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals and enhancing the review process for gun purchasers under 21. Representative Larson has also pushed for universal background checks, a ban on bump stocks, and restrictions on the capacity of firearm magazines—all of which have been passed by the House of Representatives. He knows our communities can’t afford to wait any longer for these lifesaving measures, and as a firm believer in community-led solutions, Representative Larson has championed local violence intervention organizations. As part of the last annual appropriations law, he secured more than $1 million for Mothers United Against Violence and Hartford Communities That Care, two organizations in the Greater Hartford area that address gun violence through victim support, mental health programs, and workforce development initiatives.
This year, we cannot leave anything to chance—especially as the fate of our gun safety majority in the House hangs in the balance. Voters across the Nutmeg State are demanding real results, and we must send gun safety champions like Representative John Larson back to Washington DC in November. We know he will never stop fighting for the kinds of comprehensive solutions needed to keep our children safe, and will stand firm against the deadly rhetoric of the gun lobby.
