In just one term as his state’s senior senator, Senator Jon Ossoff has already proven himself to be one of our nation’s most pragmatic and principled legislators. Throughout his time in Washington DC, Senator Ossoff has consistently championed commonsense, bipartisan solutions to some of the toughest issues facing his constituents—including our country’s epidemic of gun violence. He has followed in the footsteps of his mentor, the late Congressman John Lewis, and put politics aside to center the needs of everyday Georgians.
As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee during his first four years in office, Senator Ossoff worked with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass lifesaving gun safety legislation like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first major gun safety bill signed into law in nearly 30 years. This landmark legislative package made gun trafficking a federal crime, strengthened background checks for young gun purchasers, helped disarm domestic abusers, and allocated desperately needed funding to community violence intervention and mental health care programs that have proven to be successful at reducing cycles of violence.
As the first millennial ever elected to the US Senate and as a father to two young girls, Senator Ossoff knows we must do more to protect our school and workplaces from senseless violence. He’s proudly cosponsored additional bills to get weapons of war off our streets, strengthen safe storage requirements for firearms to ensure that guns don’t fall into the hands of children or those seeking to harm themselves or others, and provide law enforcement officers with the resources needed to reduce crime in communities across Georgia.
Senator Ossoff’s race next fall is slated to be one of the most competitive in the country.
