Since his election in 2018, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has embraced his role as the People’s Lawyer, helping communities safely live their lives with dignity and respect. Throughout his career as a community organizer, state representative, and congressman, Attorney General Ellison has built a strong record of fighting for gun safety reforms. Most notably while serving in Congress, he took part in a sit-in on the House floor to protest inaction on gun safety after the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Over the past four years, as the first Black and first Muslim attorney general of Minnesota, Attorney General Ellison has continued to push for progress on gun violence prevention.
Attorney General Ellison believes that states have the responsibility to enact commonsense gun safety reforms. For example, he is working with local leaders to develop and implement efforts to reduce gun violence in Minnesota communities. Attorney General Ellison has also been a leader to protect sensible gun laws in courts, including the US Supreme Court, to uphold sensible laws that set minimum ages for conceal-and-carry permits and require people to show proper cause before conceal-and-carry permits can be issued.
He has served as a leader in the fight against gun violence not only in Minnesota, but across the country. In 2020, Attorney General Ellison joined a coalition of state attorneys general in filing an amicus brief against a company that disseminates and publishes downloadable files and instructions on dangerous 3D-printed guns, or ghost guns, on the internet. Recently, he joined a coalition of state AGs in defending a California law that regulates the sale of long arms and semi-automatic rifles to individuals under 21.
Attorney General Keith Ellison is committed to working tirelessly to take on the most severe and violent criminal cases for prosecutors across the state, to protect Minnesotans from gun violence, and to hold the gun industry accountable. We know his work has already saved lives—which makes it essential that Minnesota reelect him to serve another four years this November.
