Candidate
Laura Gillen
US House
New York
— 4th District Democrat
Open Seat2022
Former Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen has devoted her life to helping others and fighting for justice. In 2017, after a career in commercial and criminal litigation, she became the first Democrat elected to lead her town in over 100 years. Now a law professor at Hofstra University, she is running for Congress this fall to serve her community once again—this time by working to save lives from gun violence and fighting against the NRA’s radical right-wing agenda.
Like far too many Americans, the issue of gun violence is personal for Laura Gillen. After losing her friend to senseless gun violence, she has turned her pain into action and will continue to do so in Congress. Gillen understands that responsible gun ownership and sensible gun safety legislation are not mutually exclusive, and she supports safe storage legislation that would prevent the accidental or reckless use of firearms. She knows that an overwhelming majority of Americans support universal background checks and closing loopholes that allow individuals who commit domestic violence to access firearms, and she will fight to make these policies the law of the land come 2023. Gillen will also advocate for extreme risk protection order laws so that dangerous people who seek to do harm to themselves or others don’t have easy access to firearms.
As rates of gun violence spike to record highs across the country, we need principled champions like Laura Gillen in office to fight for lifesaving reforms in Washington DC. With control of the House of Representatives hanging in the balance this November, we must send her to Capitol Hill to continue making progress on this life or death issue for all New Yorkers.
