Former Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen has devoted her life to helping others and fighting for justice. In 2017, after a career in commercial and criminal litigation, she became the first Democrat elected to lead her town in more than 100 years. Now, she is running for Congress to serve her community once again—this time by working to save lives from gun violence and fighting against the NRA’s radical right-wing agenda.

Like far too many Americans, the issue of gun violence is personal for Gillen. After losing a friend to senseless gun violence, she’s turned her pain into action and doubled down on efforts to improve public safety. Having participated in a pro bono program where she represented victims of domestic violence, Gillen understands that we must disarm domestic abusers and close dangerous loopholes in our laws that make it possible for bad actors to get their hands on deadly weapons. Gillen also knows that responsible gun ownership and sensible gun safety legislation are not mutually exclusive, and in Congress she’ll support safe storage legislation that would prevent the accidental or reckless use of firearms. She also agrees with the overwhelming majority of Americans who support universal background checks, and she will fight to make these policies the law of the land come 2025. 

This fall, a future gun safety House majority will run through New York and voters across the state must mobilize to send principled champions like Laura Gillen to fight for lifesaving reforms in Washington DC. With her helping to lead the way in Congress, we know a safer future is within reach for every family across the Fourth Congressional District.
