As a journalist, nonprofit leader, and elected official, State Senator Liz Mathis has always made listening to the concerns of Iowans a top priority. In Congress, she’ll do the same by advocating for commonsense solutions to America’s epidemic of gun violence, like passing universal background checks and keeping deadly weapons out of the hands of individuals who commit domestic abuse, which voters of all political backgrounds largely support. 

Senator Mathis was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 2011, and she has been a stalwart advocate for bolstering public safety ever since. In office, she has always stood up to the corrupt whims of the gun lobby—especially when it sought to weaken licensing and permitting requirements in the state of Iowa—and she has vocally opposed efforts to limit liability for gun manufacturers and sellers. Having grown up on the farm, she respects the rights of hunters and responsible gun owners, but knows that it’s well past time for members of Congress to put partisan politics aside and come together to pass legislation that would require the safe storage of firearms and address the scourge of gun trafficking.

Throughout her career, Senator Mathis has always spoken truth to power, and we know she’ll do the same on gun safety issues in Congress. Iowans deserve more than thoughts and prayers in the wake of everyday violence and mass shootings, and we know that Senator Liz Mathis will always be a staunch advocate for real action and policy change that will strengthen our nation’s weak gun laws. With her in office, her constituents will once again have a champion representing them who will never back down from the fight to save lives.
