For more than 17 years, Representative Norma Torres worked as a 911 dispatcher for the Los Angeles Police Department. Motivated by a desire to make a difference in the lives of people like those who called her in their moments of need, Representative Torres decided to run for a seat on the city council seat in Pomona, California, and won. A few years later, she went on to be elected mayor and then continued to represent the Inland Empire in the state assembly and state senate. 

Now, as a member of Congress, Representative Torres has been a leading supporter and cosponsor of crucial gun safety legislation like the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, the Ghost Guns are Guns Act, and the Multiple Firearm Sales Reporting Act. As a vice chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Representative Torres understands that America’s lax gun laws undermine national security and public safety around the world, and she’s introduced needed measures like the Americas Regional Monitoring of Arms Sales (ARMAS) Act, which would enhance federal oversight of firearms exports from the United States abroad. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Torres has also helped bolster funding for lifesaving community violence intervention programs and led efforts to secure a report on the number of school campus police officer units that have received active shooter training. 

It’s clear that Representative Norma Torres’s bold leadership is needed more than ever in Congress. Voters must reelect her in 2024. With gun safety champions like her in office, we can ensure a safer future free of gun violence for the next generation of Californians.
