Virginia State Senator Suhas Subramanyam has dedicated his life to serving his community and solving some of the biggest challenges facing Virginia—including the Commonwealth’s epidemic of gun violence. Throughout his career as a policy aide on Capitol Hill, an advisor to President Barack Obama, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, and now as a sitting state senator, he has always fought to give back to others and build a better future for the next generation.
In Richmond, Senator Subramanyam has worked tirelessly to strengthen Virginia’s gun laws, even introducing numerous pieces of unique legislation to allow school boards to restrict firearms on school-owned property and expand waiting periods on gun sales, many of which he was able to get signed into law by a Republican governor. Like so many in this fight, he knows that we owe our children—including his own two daughters—the chance to live free from the threat of senseless violence. In the house of delegates, Senator Subramanyam fought to expand universal background checks and enact extreme risk laws that have already proven to be effective in communities across the Commonwealth. In the Virginia Senate, Senator Subramanyam has continued to advocate for strong public safety measures designed to get guns out of the hands of those who seek to do harm to themselves or others, and he hopes to continue to take on this priority at the federal level in Congress. If elected, he’ll work to ban assault weapons, provide more protections for domestic violence victims, and increase federal funding for local community violence intervention programs—all while respecting the Second Amendment and without undermining the rights of responsible gun owners.
