Senator Tammy Duckworth’s record of service is unparalleled. As an Iraq war veteran, Purple Heart recipient, former assistant secretary of the US Department of Veterans Affairs, former congresswoman representing the Chicago suburbs, and now as Illinois’s junior United States Senator, Senator Duckworth has always put the needs of her country first. Today, Senator Duckworth continues to serve her community by advocating for commonsense solutions to America’s gun violence epidemic.
As a combat veteran who was among the first handful of army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Senator Duckworth knows that weapons of war carried by American service members overseas should not easily obtainable here at home. In the wake of daily gun violence in our communities and increasingly frequent mass shooting incidents, Senator Duckworth believes Congress has a responsibility to do more than send thoughts and prayers.
Senator Duckworth grew up in a family of marksmen, and she knows it’s possible for our nation to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals while protecting Second Amendment rights. She has been a consistent supporter of commonsense legislation to curb gun violence, and has cosponsored and voted for a variety of measures, including implementing universal background checks on all gun sales, fixing gaps in our law that allow individuals who have committed domestic abuse to access firearms, and cracking down on gun trafficking. Senator Duckworth has also been a leading advocate for funding critical community violence prevention programs that play an important role in reducing violence in communities across the country.
Now more than ever, it’s incumbent upon all of us to protect our gun safety majority in the Senate in order to get gun safety priorities passed into law. We must reelect sensible legislators with the courage to act—and that starts with Senator Tammy Duckworth. We know she can get the job done and help usher in a safer tomorrow for the people of Illinois.
