GIFFORDS LAW CENTER’S ANNIVERSARY DINNER

HONORING STACEY ABRAMS
A Virtual Celebration
May 19, 2021
5 pm Pacific/8 pm Eastern

On July 1, 1993, a gunman armed with illegally purchased assault weapons went on a murderous rampage in a San Francisco law firm, killing eight and injuring six others. The devastated Bay Area legal community banded together to form an organization to change the state’s weak gun laws. Today, California has the strongest gun laws in the country and one of the lowest gun death rates, and Giffords Law Center is a leader in the national gun violence prevention movement.

Each year, our supporters come together to honor those we lost at 101 California Street and the millions of Americans who have fallen victim to gun violence since. We also look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the coming year—challenges and opportunities that we can’t meet without your support.

HONOREES

STACEY ABRAMS
2021 Courageous Leadership Award

From her groundbreaking campaign for Georgia governor to the incredible work her organization, Fair Fight Action, has done to restore and protect voting rights, Stacey Abrams shows us how democracy is meant to function. In 2014, Emily’s List awarded her the first-ever Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award for her work as minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives. We couldn’t be more thrilled to recognize Stacey’s efforts to prevent gun violence and ensure a safer future for Georgia and the country as a whole.

ROCA BALTIMORE
2021 Lifesaving Service Award

Roca has been serving high-risk young men in Baltimore since 2018 with a uniquely effective approach that combines relentless outreach, cognitive behavioral therapy, and a deep grounding in community. Roca has been an invaluable partner with Giffords Law Center as we joined forces to successfully advocate for public investment in community-based violence intervention services in Maryland. We are deeply grateful to Roca for their tireless efforts to prevent community violence and provide a better path forward for young men in under-resourced neighborhoods.

GIBSON DUNN
2021 Odgers Pro Bono Award

Beyond serving as lead counsel in our case seeking to compel the ATF to regulate “ghost guns” as the lethal firearms they are, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has done invaluable work helping Giffords Law Center explore litigation and regulatory responses to mass shootings and dangerous weapons like short-barreled rifles. Gibson Dunn has assisted with numerous amicus briefs in important gun cases and authored a powerful brief that 139 members of the US House of Representatives filed in the most important Second Amendment case to reach the Supreme Court in a decade.

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

GETTING OFF THE SIDELINES

Saving lives from gun violence isn’t only the responsibility of politicians or private citizens—more and more, the private sector is showing the courage to fight for a safer future. New research shows that customers want companies to take clear, decisive action on the social issues that matter to everyday Americans.
