ARS PAC Endorse Catherine Cortez Masto for United States Senate
August 23, 2016 – Americans for Responsible Solutions PAC (ARS PAC), the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and retired NASA astronaut Captain Mark Kelly, today announced its endorsement of Catherine Cortez Masto for United States Senate. Citing her support for a broad set of responsible gun violence prevention policies, ARS PAC declared Catherine Cortez Masto its Nevada Champion for the Vocal Majority. Cortez Masto is opposing Congressman Joe Heck, who opposes bipartisan proposals to reduce gun violence, including closing the loopholes in federal law that let dangerous people buy a gun without a criminal background check, and voted against debating a proposal that would prevent known and suspected terrorists from buying guns.
The endorsement is part of ARS PAC’s “Vocal Majority” campaign this fall to mobilize millions of Americans to make the 2016 election a referendum on gun violence prevention and to support leaders up and down the ballot who are committed to responsible steps that reduce gun violence.
“As Nevada’s Attorney General, Catherine Cortez Masto was a tireless voice for protecting families and better enforcing our laws, and we know she is the best person in this race to fight for the responsible steps we need to help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, prevent gun tragedies, and make Nevada families safer,” said ARS PAC Co-Founders Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Kelly. “Where Congressman Heck has said he would protect the loopholes that let felons and domestic abusers get guns without a background check, Catherine will be a strong voice in the United States Senate for closing those dangerous loopholes in our laws that put our communities at risk. We need more leaders like Catherine Cortez Masto – leaders who will protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners like us and stand up for common sense. We look forward to seeing Catherine Cortez Masto be a voice for responsibility in the United States Senate.”
“I’m honored to have the support of Congresswoman Giffords, Captain Kelly, and their organization in my candidacy to be Nevada’s next Senator,” said Cortez Masto. “They are committed to reducing gun violence and keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people by enacting commonsense solutions that the majority of Nevadans support. Unfortunately, my opponent, Congressman Heck, is opposed to reasonable, potentially life-saving reforms like universal background checks. I am committed to making Nevada’s communities safer and I look forward to working with Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Kelly to do so as Nevada’s next Senator.”
Congressman Heck has said he opposes closing the loopholes in federal law that let felons, domestic abusers, and the dangerously mentally ill buy a gun without a criminal background check. In 2016, Congressman Heck also voted against debating a proposal to close the terrorist gun loophole that lets known and suspected terrorists legally purchase guns.
Catherine Cortez Masto has voiced her support for all of these commonsense measures.
