Statement: Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on the Shooting in Lincoln County, Mississippi

May 28, 2017- Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, cofounder of the gun violence prevention organization Americans for Responsible Solutions, issued the following statement reacting to the news of the tragic mass shooting in Lincoln County, Mississippi that killed eight people last night, including a sheriff’s deputy:

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI’S GUN LAWS

  • Mississippi has some of the worst gun laws in the nation, regularly scoring an F in the Law Center’s annual  Gun Law State Scorecard. 
  • The state fails to require background checks for private sales, does not license or significantly regulate firearms dealers, does not limit the number of firearms that may be purchased at one time, does not require people to obtain permits to carry concealed weapons in public, and had the third highest gun death rate in the United States in 2014.
