STATEMENT: Gun Safety Organization Responds To Outrageous Hate-Fueled Video From The Gun Lobby

July 11, 2017 — Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Navy combat veteran and NASA astronaut Captain Mark Kelly, issued the below statement following the latest hate-fueled video from the National Rifle Association.

”Fueling anger and painting a dark view of our country in order to scare people into supporting their agenda has been one of the NRA’s most consistent tactics. But the lacerating videos they produced in recent weeks are arguably the most disgraceful pieces of propaganda ever released by the NRA. ”Their latest advertisement is not only wildly out of touch with America’s culture of gun ownership – but it shows exactly why the majority of gun owners now overwhelming oppose the dangerous policies and positions supported by the NRA. While the NRA was once an organization dedicated to building a culture of gun safety, 67 percent of gun owners now believe the NRA has been overtaken by lobbyists and special interest organizations, and has lost its original purpose and mission. ”Peaceful protests are a core tenet of our democracy and an American tradition going back to the founding of our country. It is every American’s responsibility to speak up and protest their government where they see injustice. On top of that, the gun lobby’s use of footage from Nazi Germany and the Holocaust to demonize Americans exercising their basic freedoms should tell us all we need to know about how wildly out of touch the NRA is with its own members and how low they will stoop to try to boost industry profits at the expense of our safety.”
