Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“Last year, over 33,000 Americans were killed by a gun. Oregon has not been immune to this deadly crisis: somebody is killed with a gun in Oregon every 21 hours. As governor, Kate Brown hasn’t just seen our nation’s gun violence crisis firsthand, she’s worked tirelessly to combat it. In her first year in office, Governor Brown stood up to the gun lobby and signed a responsible measure that closed a loophole in Oregon law that allowed dangerous people to buy guns without a background check. Since then, she’s been a steadfast champion for addressing the lethal nexus between guns and domestic violence, and firearms and suicides. “Oregon’s governor has an important role to play in combatting gun violence and advancing solutions to make communities safer and we believe Kate Brown is best qualified to continue taking on that important challenge. Giffords is proud to endorse Kate Brown, a leader who has the courage stand up to the corporate gun lobby and who will never stop working to make Oregon communities safer.”
Governor Kate Brown:
”I am honored to have the backing of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Captain Mark Kelly, and Giffords. I believe gun violence answers nothing, offers nothing, and solves nothing. I will continue doing everything in my power to make Oregon a safer place for every family to live, work and raise a family.”
The endorsement of Governor Brown comes on the heels of a failed attempt by extreme Oregon activists to repeal SB 719 , which creates a process for obtaining an Extreme Risk Protection Order that prohibits a person who is in danger of hurting themselves or others from possessing a firearm. Earlier this year, members of the Oregon Coalition for Common Sense testified on behalf of Senate Bill 719 and urged Oregon’s leaders to pass the bill , which was eventually signed into law this fall by Governor Brown.
