Giffords Endorses Nevada Congresswoman Jacky Rosen for U.S. Senate

The endorsement comes as part of Giffords’ #VoteCourage Campaign to elect gun reform candidates nationwide

March 21, 2018 – Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Jacky Rosen, Congresswoman for Nevada’s 3rd congressional district and candidate for U.S. Senate. Rosen is one of 13 candidates Giffords endorsed today as part of its #VoteCourage campaign to elect gun safety champions.

Jacky Rosen has served as Congresswoman for Nevada’s 3rd congressional district since 2016. Rosen is the former President of Congregation Ner Tamid, the largest synagogue in Nevada, where she spearheaded a number of civic initiatives. Congresswoman Rosen supports commonsense gun safety legislation including universal background checks and barring domestic abusers from purchasing firearms.

After bump stocks were used at a country music festival in Las Vegas to cause the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, Rosen voiced her support for a ban on the devices.

Congresswoman Jacky Rosen: “Congresswoman Gabby Giffords has been a courageous champion for the movement to end gun violence, and I’m so grateful to have her support and the endorsement of Giffords in my race for U.S. Senate. This has become a public health crisis, and I believe we can respect the rights of responsible gun owners while still taking reasonable steps to promote gun safety and save lives. Nevada needs a new senator with the courage and backbone to stand up to the gun lobby and support commonsense laws that will make our communities safer.”

“Congresswoman Jacky Rosen has seen the tragic toll that gun violence can take on our communities. After the horror of the Las Vegas shooting, Jacky has become one of Congress’ fiercest advocates for gun safety measures that can help reduce the number of people victimized by gun violence,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “Last October, Jacky helped introduce the Keep Americans Safe Act of 2017, which would prohibit the transfer or possession of high-capacity magazines. With such a strong record on fighting for gun safety, we know she will continue to stand up for gun violence prevention in the Senate and we will be doing everything we can to get her there.”

Last month, Giffords launched the #VoteCourage campaign aimed at electing gun safety advocates to Congress and defeating politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence. The political program is targeting incumbents in mostly suburban districts and uses a mixture of TV and digital advertising, on-the-ground organizing, and a voter registration push to create momentum for meaningful progress on gun safety.

The mass shooting at Parkland, Florida crystallized the country’s frustration with the lack of action to pass gun safety laws. Currently, the country is averaging nearly 34,000 deaths from guns every year, and recent polling shows that support for stronger gun laws is at an all-time high.
