Giffords Applauds Oklahoma Governor Fallin for Vetoing Bill That Would Have Allowed Individuals to Carry a Firearm Without a Permit or Training

 Senate Bill 1212 would have established Oklahoma as the 13th permitless carry state by eliminating requirement to complete firearms safety and training course before carrying a gun in public 

May 14, 2018 — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, released the following statement applauding Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin for vetoing legislation that would have allowed individuals to carry loaded firearms without a permit or training.

Statement from Robin Lloyd, Director of Government Affairs at Giffords:

“The Governor’s decision to veto this dangerous legislation was a courageous step towards protecting the safety and security of all Oklahomans. The Governor was not alone in her opposition to this bill; it was opposed by law enforcement officers and small business owners who know that making it easier for dangerous or untrained people to carry loaded handguns in public puts Oklahoma communities at risk. Giffords applauds Governor Fallin’s courageous decision to maintain permitting standards, keeping law enforcement and communities safe.”

Since 2012, Oklahoma authorized individuals with a valid handgun license to carry both concealed and unconcealed handguns in public. Any person possessing a handgun in public without the license is criminally liable for a misdemeanor. Governor Fallin’s veto keeps this law intact, preventing unlicensed individuals from carrying both concealed and unconcealed weapons.
