Giffords Endorses Lucy McBath for Congress in Georgia

 The endorsement comes as part of Giffords’ #VoteCourage Campaign to elect gun reform candidates nationwide 

Washington, DC – Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Lucy McBath, candidate for Georgia’s 6th congressional district. McBath is one of 11 candidates Giffords endorsed today as part of its #VoteCourage campaign to elect gun safety champions and joins a growing list of endorsed candidates supported by Giffords in 2018.

After Lucy McBath lost her son in a shooting in 2012, she felt compelled to join the growing movement for stronger gun laws. Since then, Lucy has become an outspoken advocate for meaningful, common sense gun laws that will prevent more children from being victims of gun violence.

“No parent should have to bury their child,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “I can’t imagine the pain Lucy suffered when her son Jordan was killed, but Lucy has taken that tragedy and turned it into action, fighting for gun reforms that could put an end to the gun violence crisis gripping our country. Lucy’s determination to prevent more mothers from knowing her pain is exactly the type of courage we need in Congress.”

She has fought tirelessly to remind leaders in our communities and in Washington that Americans are demanding common sense solutions to end gun violence. I hope to join her in that fight on behalf of Georgia’s 6th district.”

In February, Giffords launched the #VoteCourage campaign aimed at electing gun safety advocates to Congress and defeating politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence. The political program is targeting incumbents in mostly suburban districts and uses a mixture of TV and digital advertising, on-the-ground organizing, and a voter registration push to create momentum for meaningful progress on gun safety.

The mass shooting at Parkland, Florida crystallized the country’s frustration with the lack of action to pass gun safety laws. Currently, the country is averaging nearly 34,000 deaths from guns every year, and recent polling shows that support for stronger gun laws is at an all-time high.
