Giffords Endorses Congresswoman Norma Torres for Reelection to Congress in California
The endorsement comes as part of Giffords’ #VoteCourage Campaign to elect gun reform candidates nationwide
May 25, 2018 — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Congresswoman Norma Torres’ reelection campaign for California’s 35th congressional district.
Congresswoman Norma Torres has been a fierce champion for gun violence prevention. In Washington DC, she’s fought hard to protect California communities by supporting and fighting for life-saving policies like universal background checks and keeping guns out of the wrong hands. Rep. Torres worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for 17 years, so she knows firsthand the devastation gun violence causes.
“Congresswoman Torres knows what it takes to protect our children from gun violence,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “Too much is at stake to sit out an election as important as this one. In Congress, Norma has stood up to the gun lobby and their dangerous agenda – it’s time for us to stand up for her. I’m proud to endorse Norma for Congress so she can keep fighting for us to strengthen our nation’s gun safety laws.”
“As a former 911 dispatcher, I have witnessed far too many times the devastation that gun violence can have on our communities,” said Congresswoman Torres. “I’m deeply humbled to have the support in this election of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords–a victim of gun violence herself–and to be considered a champion among the leaders working on common sense policies to protect our children from being murdered at their schools.”
Giffords recently launched the #VoteCourage campaign aimed at electing gun safety advocates to Congress and defeating politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence. The political program targets incumbents in mostly suburban districts and uses a mixture of TV and digital advertising, on-the-ground organizing, and a voter registration push to create momentum for meaningful progress on gun safety.
