Giffords Endorses Congressman Darren Soto for Congress in Florida

Washington, DC — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Congressman Darren Soto for reelection  in Florida’s ninth congressional district.

Congressman Darren Soto has been a strong voice for common sense gun laws in Congress. He voted against the gun lobby’s dangerous concealed carry reciprocity measure last year and has advocated for requiring background checks on all firearm sales as part of his five point gun safety plan. Florida families are tired of inaction from Congress when it comes to addressing our nation’s gun violence epidemic. Congressman Soto has heard their voices and will continue to fight for their interests in Washington.

“Darren Soto is a fighter who has stood up to the gun lobby in Congress, refused to stay silent on the need to address our gun violence crisis, and championed legislation that will save lives,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “We are proud to endorse Darren for re-election because he is committed to protecting not only the people of Florida, but communities all across the country. We look forward to continuing our work with Darren as we push for the solutions that will keep our schools, streets, churches, and neighborhoods safe.”

“Congresswoman Gabby Giffords is a singular force in American life,” said Congressman Darren Soto. “She is the definition of courage. It is humbling to have her support. Her, her husband Mark, and the entire Giffords organization are true leaders, and I am honored to work with them to end gun violence. The NRA is a determined opponent, but the great majority of Americans are seeing through their lies. Together, we will overcome them and pass real gun safety reform.”

Giffords’  #VoteCourage campaign  is aimed at electing gun safety advocates to Congress and defeating politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence. The political program targets incumbents in mostly suburban districts and uses a mixture of TV and digital advertising, on-the-ground organizing, and a voter registration push to create momentum for meaningful progress on gun safety.
