STATEMENT: Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on the Passing of Representative Elijah Cummings

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, reacted to the news that Representative Elijah Cummings (MD-07) died at the age of 68.

“Elijah Cummings was the best of who we are. His kindness and generosity touched everyone, including me, when I first got to Congress. He was a true friend to all who knew him and I treasure the bond we forged as colleagues. After the Tucson shooting he spoke on the House floor of ‘the pure heart of a servant.’ Elijah embodied that idea. He never stopped serving the Baltimore community he grew up in. He never backed down from doing the hard work to make our country a better place that gave everyone a seat at the table. He always extended a hand—even if he disagreed with you—to show that our differences do not prevent us from working together. Elijah’s life will forever be a model for service in the public interest. I live by his example every day. Rest in peace, my dear friend.”
