Gabrielle Giffords Releases Statement Ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union Address
February 4, 2020 — Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization co-founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement ahead of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address tonight.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“President Donald Trump has failed to act to protect our kids and communities from gun violence. We worry about our kids treating lockdown drills as routine. We look for exit signs when we go to houses of worship, a movie, concert, nightclub, or the mall. We wonder if our community will be the next to live through a shooting. We live in this reality and face daily anxiety over this crisis because of President Trump’s empty promises and indifference.
“President Trump fights for the NRA’s political interest, not our public safety. He‘s had opportunity after opportunity to act by passing universal background checks; instead, he takes his orders from the gun lobby.
“President Trump can’t hide from the crisis gun violence has become under his watch. His State of the Union should note that since he became President more than 111,000 people in our country have been killed with a gun. There have been more than 500 mass shootings, including four of the ten deadliest in American history. More than 4,500 children under the age of 18 have been shot and killed and over 1,800 women have been shot and killed by intimate partners.
“The consequences of President Trump’s broken record on guns should be remembered by every American this year. The power to change our future and elect a Gun Safety President is in our hands.”
