NRA’s Tailspin of Deception & Corruption Results in Bankruptcy

Washington DC — Today the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) rapid decline continued with the news that the organization is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The announcement noted that the group plans to reincorporate in Texas as part of the fallout. The ongoing demise of the NRA is a positive development for the majority of Americans who support commonsense gun safety laws proven to save lives. Leaders at Giffords shared the following statements:

Peter Ambler, Giffords Executive Director:

“Long morally bankrupt, now financially bankrupt, NRA leaders failed their members with their corruption and self-dealing.They failed gun owners by advocating for an extreme and deadly perversion of the Second Amendment. They failed Americans by making our kids and communities less safe. And they failed our democracy by promoting the racism and insurrectionist mentality that led to the invasion of the US Capitol.

This is a devastating blow to the reputation, influence, and effectiveness of the NRA. Giffords will continue to confront special interests and work to pass commonsense gun safety legislation that will protect us from gun violence.

Adam Skaggs, Giffords Law Center Chief Counsel & Policy Director:

“Just as the NRA denies any responsibility for fueling the toxic political environment that inspired the insurrection at the US Capitol, today’s bankruptcy filing is the latest attempt by the NRA to evade accountability. The NRA created a shell corporation in Texas just weeks after November’s election and is using it to file for bankruptcy in a transparent attempt to evade New York Attorney General Leticia James’s campaign to hold the NRA and its corrupt leaders accountable. This sham must be rejected.”

Shannon Flores, Giffords Gun Owners for Safety:

“The NRA is not welcome in Texas. Wayne LaPierre and his cronies care more about lining their pockets than having honest conversations with gun owners. They are on the wrong side of a growing movement that recognizes that strong gun laws and responsible firearm ownership go hand in hand. Changing their address can’t change the fact that the NRA does not speak for people like me.”
