NEW TV AD: Giffords Pressures Senate to Pass Life-Saving Gun Safety Legislation
Six-figure ad buy urges common sense safety measures as House passage of universal background checks puts focus on the Senate
WASHINGTON, D.C.– Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced today a six-figure TV ad buy, highlighting the universal appeal of universal background checks and urging the Senate to find the courage to cast aside a floundering gun lobby and pass this policy into law. The national ad campaign for background checks comes as the House of Representatives passed H.R. 8 with strong bipartisan support and President Joe Biden committed to signing a bill if it reaches his desk.
Recent polling shows that 93% of Americans support background checks on all gun sales (which is on par with job creation and covid relief). It also found that 86% of Americans who split their votes between parties agreed that “there is no excuse for the next president and Congress not to pass background checks into law.” The ad spotlights individuals from all walks of life and reinforces that wherever Americans live, they back policies that can prevent gun violence.
“H.R. 8 unites Americans more than any other bill before Congress. 2020 saw tragic spikes in gun violence, and universal background checks is the best opportunity we have to pass a commonsense law that will keep guns away from people prohibited from buying one and save thousands of lives,” said Peter Ambler, executive director of Giffords. “Our new campaign is running on airwaves to remind senators what we all know — that not only is public opposition to this legislation basically nonexistent, but the special interest opposition has never been weaker. We can help keep American kids and communities safe if senators fulfill their responsibility and pass popular, lifesaving legislation that Americans want and need.”
As part of the campaign, Giffords’ new ad, We All Know, encourages the Senate to act urgently and pass the historic legislation. The ad will run across the DC market from March 17 until April 6 on CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC.
The ad also underscores the precarious position of the gun lobby as the National Rifle Association continues to grapple with corruption among its leadership. Earlier this year the organization announced a filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The announcement noted that the group plans to reincorporate in Texas as part of the fallout. The ongoing demise of the NRA is a positive development for the majority of Americans who support commonsense gun safety laws proven to save lives.
