Failure to Act on Gun Safety Continues to Have Tragic Consequences with One Dead and 13 Injured in Mass Shooting in Tennessee
Washington, DC: A mass shooting at a supermarket in Collierville, Tennessee, has left one person dead and 13 injured earlier today. Giffords Executive Director Peter Ambler and Giffords Law Center Executive Director Robyn Thomas called on national leaders to address the gun violence crisis, stating that inaction is not an option.
Peter Ambler and Robyn Thomas:
“No one should have to fear gun violence when shopping at a grocery store. Yet today at least one person was killed, thirteen more injured, and many others will face a lifetime of trauma from this horrific mass shooting in Collierville. Employees were trained to hide in freezers to hide from the shooter, just like students are trained to hide in closets and bathrooms at their schools. We shouldn’t have to live in constant fear of gun violence. We need our leaders to act.
And while mass shootings like this one often generate the most national attention, we know that each day gun violence takes an average of 100 lives. Every single day. But in states like Tennessee, we have seen laws pass that actually make it easier for people to carry guns in public. When will our elected leaders have the courage to pass lifesaving gun laws and stop putting gun industry profits over the safety of our communities?”
