Gabby Giffords Statement on White House Celebration for Bipartisan Safer Community Act

Washington DC — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords issued the following statement ahead of the White House celebration of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This is the first bipartisan gun safety legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years. Last week, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Biden, along with 16 other individuals. On July 15, Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, a documentary by the filmmakers of RBG that chronicles Gabby’s inspiring recovery story and gun safety advocacy, will premiere.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“For nearly 30 years Congress stood by while gun violence needlessly took the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans. After the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, I founded Giffords and helped launch a broad national movement to stop gun violence. That movement produced this moment. For the first time since I was shot—the first time since Sandy Hook, Charleston, Parkland, Las Vegas, El Paso, and many other tragedies—we finally came together to pass significant gun safety laws. This legislation will save lives. I am grateful for our team and our partners across the country, for all of the survivors who have turned their tragedy into action, and for the bipartisan majority who stood up to the gun lobby and said, ‘Enough.’ I am honored to be celebrating with them today. Our fight isn’t over and we will continue to work together to end gun violence.”
