Giffords: Lawmakers Should Act
to Protect the Public after Radical SCOTUS Decision
Washington DC — Giffords, the gun safety organization co-founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, released a memo outlining steps that state lawmakers should take to protect their residents in response to the Supreme Court’s radical ruling against gun safety in NYSRPAv. Bruen. As explained in more detail in the memo, Giffords is working with lawmakers in states impacted by the Court’s ruling to urgently, among other things:
- Strengthen qualification standards for licenses to carry firearms in public to prevent people with histories of violent and dangerous behavior from obtaining licenses
- Strengthen licensing procedures to promote more robust vetting of applicants for firearm licenses
- Ensure license applicants receive comprehensive safety training needed to carry a gun in public and demonstrate knowledge and commitment to comply with relevant gun laws
- Protect especially sensitive places by designating them as off-limits to weapons carrying
David Pucino, Deputy Chief Counsel, Giffords Law Center:
“The radical conservatives on the Supreme Court have struck down a more than 100 year-old law, bringing more guns into public places. Research shows time and time again: more guns in public result in more violence and more deaths. Giffords is committed to working with states to protect their communities from this reckless and dangerous decision.”
Experts from Giffords and its legal arm, Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, are working closely with lawmakers and advocates across the country to respond to the Supreme Court’s dangerous opinion, amend relevant laws, defend against a wave of expected radical gun lobby challenges in court, and promote effective gun safety reform nationwide.
