Giffords Launches New Montana Coalition of Gun Owners for Safety

Helena, MT — Today, Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by the former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, launched a new chapter ofGun Owners for Safety in Montana. Giffords Gun Owners for Safety, a coalition of hunters, sport shooters, and collectors, have come together to advocate for commonsense gun violence prevention laws and promote safety.

    Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“We are proud to launch our Montana chapter of Giffords Gun Owners for Safety today. Over the past decade, more than 100,000 gun owners across the country have joined our organization to say that the NRA and gun lobby don’t speak for them. These gun owners know that commonsense gun laws go hand in hand with the right afforded by the Second Amendment. Time and time again, our cities and communities have had to face the devastation caused by gun violence. But I have hope. I have hope because of individuals like these who are finding the courage to speak out for change. We look forward to working with this group to enact meaningful change that will make Montana safer.”

    Ryan Busse, Giffords Senior Advisor:
“Growing up, guns were an integral part of my life. Shooting and hunting have always represented important parts of my culture, but I was taught at a young age to recognize the responsibility and safety required to maintain this freedom. Balancing gun ownership with responsibility is absolutely central to the well-being of our democracy. Montana Gun Owners for Safety unites like-minded gun owners who know that responsibility is part of protecting our Second Amendment rights. I’m grateful for the important work that Giffords is doing and excited to be part of this chapter.”

Jason Boren, Deputy Engagement Director of Gun Owners for Safety:
“The Second Amendment is an important right that I and many other Americans value highly. Most Americans also believe that we should be free to go to work, school, and places of worship without worrying about being shot. That’s why the Giffords Gun Owners for Safety coalition is so important. Gun ownership comes with responsibility, and the fact is that the majority of gun owners support commonsense gun safety laws such as universal background checks. The launch of our latest Gun Owners for Safety chapter in Montana will support gun owners and their dedication to safe and responsible gun ownership while defending their constitutional rights.”

The Montana chapter of Gun Owners for Safety (MT-GOS) includes 137 gun owners who support commonsense gun laws. Members of the coalition have been deeply troubled by the increasing number of gun-related deaths and injuries throughout the country. As a result, MT-GOS is committed to supporting sound and reasonable regulations that prioritize the safety of the citizens of Montana and remain consistent with the liberties afforded by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.

    Solutions MT-GOS will support:

Reducing gun violence in Montana: Gun deaths are preventable, which is why MT-GOS is committed to tackling the gun violence epidemic through advocacy, public education, and policy change.

Shifting culture: We help foster a culture where Montanans are informed about what makes them safer and are inspired to fight for a better future.

Promoting responsible gun ownership: We promote firearm safety and responsibility. We hold accountable those who seek to profit at the expense of public safety, including the gun lobby and entrenched special interest groups.
