Former Congresswoman Giffords Marks Five Years since Parkland Shooting

Washington DC — Today, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords marks five years since the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed and 17 people were injured on February 14, 2018. Last night, another school community was torn apart by gun violence at Michigan State University. Three students were killed and five were injured.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“Five years ago, on a day that should have been full of love, the lives of 14 students and three adults were stolen in a horrific act of gun violence. The shooter, who had a history of erratic and violent behavior, should not have been able to access a gun, and the 17 people killed that day should still be alive. The entire Parkland community will forever endure the trauma of gun violence, as do far too many communities across this country. Nearly every American will know a victim of gun violence in their lifetime. We owe it to every person whose life has been taken or forever changed by gun violence to honor them with action.”

During 2023, Giffords is highlighting gun violence survivors every month. This month, Giffords is sharing Olivia Wesch’s story. Olivia is a survivor of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School.

Olivia Wesch, Parkland Survivor:

“I live every day for the 17 students and teachers who lost their lives that day. People tend to believe that gun violence only impacts others. It will never happen to them. I plead with them: Don’t wait until someone you love loses their life to gun violence. Take action, speak out, and make a change before it’s too late.”
