Giffords PAC Endorses Jennifer McClellan for the US House of Representatives

Washington DC — Today, Giffords PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced its endorsement of State Senator Jennifer McClellan in the special election for the US House of Representatives in Virginia’s 4th congressional district.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“Virginians deserve a leader who will fight for commonsense gun safety laws and stand up to the gun lobby’s dangerous agenda. State Senator Jennifer McClellan is exactly that champion, and Virginia voters could not ask for a better advocate to fight on their behalf in Washington. Throughout her decades in public service, Senator McClellan has been one of the foremost champions of policies to reduce gun violence in Richmond. At every level, she has proven that she will always be committed to putting the safety of Virginians first. Senator McClellan understands that it is unacceptable that more than 1,000 Virginians lose their lives to gun violence every year—especially when these losses are preventable. I know that she will work tirelessly in Congress to pass real solutions to address our epidemic of violence and save lives. I am proud to endorse Senator McClellan in this special election and look forward to working with her to build a safer country for the next generation.”

State Senator Jennifer McClellan:

“People want to feel safe, and too often in Virginia that has not been the case. I know that we can do a better job of protecting our communities from harm while still respecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. In the state legislature, I’ve helped lead the push to save lives from senseless gun violence and have proudly stood alongside organizations like Giffords PAC and courageous leaders like Gabby Giffords. I thank them for their endorsement in this race and promise to work with them to close loopholes and protect Virginians from gun violence in Congress. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and save lives across the 4th District.”

As the mother of two school-age kids, State Senator Jennifer McClellan understands that those in power need to act with conviction and urgency to protect our children from the dangers of gun violence. Having seen the devastating impacts of too many senseless shootings across the Commonwealth, she supports enacting comprehensive gun reforms to make communities safer for every Virginian. As a state legislator, she led the fight in the Virginia Senate to pass a bill that requires the reporting of lost or stolen firearms in 2020. In her nearly two decades in Richmond, she’s consistently taken on the gun lobby’s dangerous practices and cosponsored new laws to reinstate Virginia’s “one-gun-a-month” rule and to implement universal background checks across the state. Senator McClellan has also cosponsored legislation that allows localities to prohibit guns in certain public spaces and led a Senate bill that would establish a Center for Firearm Violence Intervention and Prevention to collect data and publish reports on violence caused by firearms, including suicide.

With just a handful of seats determining the balance of power in the US House, voters have the chance to step up to the plate in this key special election and push back on the Republican majority’s dangerous attempts to repeal the few federal gun safety laws on the books—and they must elect Senator Jennifer McClellan to fight on their behalf.
