GIFFORDS Applauds Governor Cooper’s Veto of Legislation to Repeal North Carolina’s Pistol Permit Law
Washington DC — GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of legislation that would repeal North Carolina’s pistol permit law. Currently North Carolina law provides that no person may purchase or receive a handgun without a permit to purchase a handgun or a concealed handgun permit.
Peter Ambler, GIFFORDS Executive Director:
“We are extremely grateful to Governor Cooper for his unrelenting leadership and commitment to keeping North Carolinians safe. This legislation would be an enormous step backward in the fight for gun safety and would eliminate a critical tool for local law enforcement to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. It would endanger the lives of women and children across the state because it removes an important check that the North Carolina sheriffs conduct for people with domestic violence protective orders. We thank him for his leadership, will fight any attempt to override his veto and will continue to work with him to fight for a safer future for all North Carolinians.”
