GIFFORDS Commends United States Conference of Mayors for Demanding Action on Gun Safety Legislation

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement applauding a bipartisan group of 162 mayors in the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) for demanding that Congress takes prompt action on gun safety legislation.

Allison Anderman, GIFFORDS Senior Counsel and Director of Local Policy:
“In 2023, the United States has had more mass shootings than days in the year because far too many members of Congress have capitulated to gun extremism instead of working to find solutions to end this country’s gun violence epidemic. Like most Americans, mayors across the country are frustrated with the lack of action and acceptance of the status quo. While these shootings happen in local communities, many mayors’ hands are tied when it comes to passing effective, commonsense gun violence prevention policies because the gun industry successfully lobbied state legislators to take away local freedom to pass gun safety laws. Until states repeal these onerous laws passed at the behest of the gun lobby, it is up to Congress to enact meaningful laws to protect our communities like the ones called for by USCM that include bans on assault weapons and large capacity magazines and strengthening the background check system. We are grateful to the fearless mayors who have taken a stand by calling for action and GIFFORDS offers our full support.”
