More than One Thousand Gun Owners Urge Congress to Block Repeal of Pistol Brace Regulation

GIFFORDS Gun Owners for Safety Members from 48 States and Washington DC Signed Letter to Congress

Washington DC — Today, more than 1,100 members of GIFFORDS Gun Owners for Safety, including former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, sent a letter to Congressional leadership urging them not to advance S. J. Res. 20/H. J. Res 44. This resolution would repeal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Rule 2021R-08F, which regulates certain models of semiautomatic pistols when equipped with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles under the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA).

Excerpts from the letter:

“GIFFORDS Gun Owners for Safety is made up of gun owners from 48 states and the District of Columbia. We represent hunters, veterans, law enforcement, and sports shooters. We advocate for policies that help prevent gun violence and also respect our Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. Therefore, we stand in strong opposition to H. J. Res 44 and S. J. Res. 20.

“ATF’s Rule 2021R-08F does not ban any law-abiding person from owning, possessing, or buying stabilizing braces. This rule simply clarifies that certain semi-automatic pistols equipped with stabilizing braces that have objective design features that allow an individual to shoulder the firearm are short-barreled rifles. Short-barreled rifles have been regulated by ATF under the NFA for almost a century because they are concealable and maneuverable like a handgun but offer shooters the stability and accuracy of a rifle, with certain pistol models chambered in rifle calibers with rounds capable of penetrating soft body armor commonly used by law enforcement officers….

“We, the 1,198 undersigned gun owners representing 48 states and the District of Columbia, ask you to oppose S.J. Res. 20/H. J. Res 44. We further respectfully ask that you prioritize gun safety laws that will save lives.”
