GIFFORDS Applauds Governor Lamont, CT Legislature for Enacting Critical Gun Safety Measures

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded Governor Ned Lamont and the Connecticut legislature for passing and signing into law HB 6667, which enacts critical gun safety measures.

David Pucino, Deputy Chief Counsel:
“With this bill, Connecticut has taken important new steps that solidify its status as a national leader in the fight against gun violence. HB 6667 will further strengthen state law and close important gaps. In particular, this bill will address the problem of gun trafficking by targeting the sources of trafficked guns. These steps will make Connecticut safer, and I thank the governor for his leadership on this critical issue.”

Among other things, the new law:

  • Prohibits bulk purchases of firearms
  • Increases accountability for irresponsible gun dealers
  • Prohibits the open carrying of firearms in public
  • Prevents those under 21 from buying semiautomatic rifles with a capacity greater than five rounds
  • Increases the applicability of safe storage requirement
