GIFFORDS Statement on Election of Congressman Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House

Washington DC — GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement following Wednesday’s election of Congressman Mike Johnson as Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Peter Ambler, GIFFORDS Co-founder & Executive Director:

“Today, House Republicans elected an extremist who has put the will of the gun lobby ahead of the safety of Americans. By choosing Johnson as Speaker, the Republican party has made it clear that it has no interest in addressing public safety. Meanwhile, Americans have made it clear that they want congressional leaders to focus not on sham impeachment hearings and other meaningless theatrics but on clear, bipartisan solutions on issues like gun violence, which is the number one cause of death for children in this country.”

In the 117th Congress, Johnson voted against the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, the Protecting Our Kids Act, and the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, which would keep guns out of the hands of people convicted of domestic abuse and stalking. Johnson also opposed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first federal gun safety law in nearly 30 years that enhanced background checks for people under 21 years old, made gun trafficking a federal crime, and provided funding for violence intervention programs. This year, he also voted for legislation that would have nullified the ATF’s rule on pistol stabilizing braces and cosponsored gun lobby-backed legislation to force concealed carry reciprocity nationwide.
