Former Congresswoman Giffords’s Statement on Halloween Party Shooting in Chicago
Washington DC — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, released the following statement after a mass shooting at a Halloween party in Chicago early Sunday morning. It is reported that 15 people were shot.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“A night of fun shouldn’t so easily turn into a nightmare of violence. Illinois has some of the strongest gun laws in the country, but until surrounding states and federal leaders act, guns will continue to be too easily accessible. Arguments will continue to turn into violence. Just last month I visited Chicago and met with dozens of survivors of gun violence in the city. The trauma of yesterday morning will affect the survivors for the rest of their lives. GIFFORDS stands ready to support survivors and will continue to fight for stronger gun safety laws. Our leaders must do more.”
Last month, GIFFORDS hosted a training for survivors in Chicago with Survivors Empowered. The Survivors Toolkit can be found here.
