Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Remembers Victims of Shooting in Las Vegas, Six Years Later

Washington DC — Today, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the gun safety organization GIFFORDS, released the following statement honoring the victims of the mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Six years ago today, a gunman opened fire upon thousands attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival, killing 60 people and injuring 800 more as people fled.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Nevada lawmakers passed meaningful gun safety legislation, including universal background checks, a ban on bump stocks, and an extreme risk protection order law.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“I’ll never forget turning on the news to learn that a gunman fired upon crowds at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas six years ago today. The shock and devastation that the entire nation felt watching and hearing about the 60 lives lost and the terror inflicted on hundreds of others sticks with me to this day. The days and months following October 1 were filled with mourning, but also with urgency and demands for action—which Nevada lawmakers listened to, passing significant gun safety measures. I hold onto these moments of progress alongside the tragedies that accompany them as I continue to honor every victim and survivor of gun violence with action.”
