GIFFORDS: Trump Lacks Backbone to Fight Gun Violence

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement on Donald Trump’s agenda for a second term.

“Despite his tough talk, America’s gun homicides jumped 34% under Donald Trump. He simply didn’t have the strength or the backbone to solve this problem. After promising to enact universal background checks, Trump let the NRA boss him around and completely reversed his position.
“Joe Biden is, hands down, the only candidate in this race who has both the track record and the guts to stand up to the gun lobby and protect Americans from gun crime.”
During the Trump administration gun homicides across the country increased from 14,415 in 2016 to 19,384 in 2020. Meanwhile, Trump has dramatically reversed his stance after speaking with the NRA, despite openly considering popular, commonsense policies like universal background checks, red flag laws, and raising the minimum age for purchasing an assault rifle following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
