GIFFORDS: Gun Violence Threatens Our Democracy
On anniversary of the January 6 insurrection, former Congresswoman Giffords urges states to act to protect our democracy
Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, released the following statement highlighting the dangerous intersection of gun violence and democracy on the third anniversary of the January 6 insurrection.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“As we enter another presidential election year, it is imperative that states act to protect our elections. Three years ago we saw firsthand how violence and intimidation can threaten our democracy. Armed insurrectionists tried to stop the certification of the 2020 election with an unprecedented assault on our nation’s capital. One extremist group spent more than $20,000 on guns and tactical equipment in preparation for the attack.
“The January 6 insurrection is just one example of armed intimidation and political violence in recent years. I know all too well what happens when extremists have access to guns and act against public officials.
“Americans have the right to vote without the fear of gun violence and intimidation. From the White House to local mayoral races, 2024 will have a significant impact on the future of our country. State leaders must put politics aside and protect voters, election workers, and public officials.”
Recommendations for States:
- States should prohibit all guns in and around sites where elections are taking place, including concealed carry.
- States should strengthen laws protecting voters and election workers from intimidation by explicitly addressing firearm intimidation.
- States must pass stronger anti-intimidation laws that protect voters and election workers.
