GIFFORDS Statement on Wayne LaPierre’s Resignation from the NRA

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, released the following statement after National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO Wayne LaPierre announced he was resigning effective January 31.

Chris Harris, Vice President of Communication, GIFFORDS:

“On the eve of his corruption trial, Wayne LaPierre’s resignation from the NRA is fitting. The extensive corruption under La Pierre’s tenure revealed what we always knew to be true: that the NRA wasn’t representing most gun owners or their interests, they were in it for personal gain. Meanwhile, responsible gun owners across the country, including thousands of GIFFORDS Gun Owners for Safety, have rallied behind commonsense solutions. Gun Owners for Safety unites hunters, sport shooters, and collectors who want commonsense gun laws. We’ve consistently proven that together, we can defeat the influence of the gun lobby in Washington and state houses across the country.”

During La Pierre’s tenure, the NRA was engaged in widespread corruption. Among other things, the NRA has engaged in a scheme to make at least $35 million in excessive contributions to political candidates in violation of federal campaign finance laws. GIFFORDS has sued the NRA over these violations.
