GIFFORDS Applauds Massachusetts Senate for Passing Crucial Gun Safety Legislation
Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement applauding the Massachusetts Senate for passing the SAFER Act (S.2572).
Joe Platte, State Legislative Manager for GIFFORDS:
“Massachusetts senators took an important step today towards our shared goal of passing innovative gun safety legislation that confronts gun violence head on. We are grateful to Senate President Spilka and Majority Leader Creem for their continued commitment and urgency to this important issue, and to every senator who voted to keep the people of Massachusetts safe from gun violence.
“As Massachusetts House and Senate leaders work to determine next steps for gun safety legislation, we are eager to support them. Together, we can send bold legislation to the governor’s desk that will regulate ghost guns, keep our public spaces safe, support disproportionately impacted communities in the Commonwealth, and more.”
The SAFER Act would:
- Implement nation-leading standards and policies to prevent ghost guns from flooding Massachusetts communities.
- Ban the possession of devices that convert semiautomatic weapons into fully automatic machine guns.
- Codify existing prohibitions on certain assault weapons into state law.
- Reform gun dealer inspections by local police departments.
- Strengthen the state’s extreme risk protection order law, also known as a “red flag law.”
- Improve data collection to inform evidence-based policy solutions.
- Create a commission to study how the state can better fund community violence intervention services in disproportionately impacted communities.
